3D printing and design at drone cage
The Print Farm
At Drone Cage, we have a passion for innovation and design. We persevere to be at the forefront of our field. To be able to achieve this, we need an edge. One of our edges comes in the form of our bespoke equipment. Amongst our more specialist equipment, Drone Cage boasts it’s own in house print farm. Having the on-site ability to produce rapid prototypes for testing and development speeds up our design process but ultimately keeps the costs to our customers low.
Our largest 3D printer is a great example of this. It is built from some of the same sustainable materials as our Drone Cage range, keeping in house costs down, helping to offset our carbon foot print and drive the cost of production even lower. This machine was a bespoke build to suit the Drone Cage range as machines as capable as this are simply not available at the price point which keeps our products competitively priced. The rest of our machines are all tailored to suit the individual requirements of the parts they produce and are maintained to the highest of standards to ensure we uphold our first class reputation for superior quality products.
Innovation
To achieve the precision required to construct our Drone Cage range, a repeatable yet reliable way to cut the carbon fibre rods was needed. Previously with our earlier versions of the Drone Cage range, we had a supplier cut the carbon rods and tubes for us. This proved to be a very inefficient and lengthy process. We set about designing our own equipment to meet the arduous task of cutting carbon fibre for ourselves.
Inline with our ambitions to keep our carbon footprint to a minimum, our carbon fibre rod milling machine operates on bespoke 7.2 Volt Lithium Iron batteries that our engineers re-purposed from old laptop cells, and are all charged from the power outlets on our vehicles.
Every Drone Cage produced as of April 2019 (Serial #01041-onward) is constructed from carbon fibre rods and tubes that have been machined in house, and passed by our own quality control processes.
Prototyping
At Drone Cage we constantly have new ideas and design changes that move to improve the product. It’s not uncommon to see stacks of concept parts lined up on the workshop benches as they are going through the design stages.
At Drone Cage, we also carry out a lot of destruction testing. This forms a key part of the confidence we have in our own products. We regularly test the smallest of components, right the way up to complete Drone Cages fitted with mock-up drones. This enables us to fully understand the limits of the materials we work with, looking for improvements where necessary.
